A flipping good time was had at Cookery Club this week as we celebrated Shrove Tuesday.
Historically, Shrove Tuesday marked a day where people had to prepare for Lent, and since people were not going to be baking cakes or other desserts for over a month they needed to get rid of any leftover items that would go out of date. So, you're probably wondering - why pancakes? Well, Shrove was often the last opportunity for people to use their leftover eggs, milk and sugar before the items went off. Pancakes were one of the easiest ways to use up these ingredients before the fasting season began.
